Deceptikonz – Like What [video]

May 19, 2010  |  Uncategorized  |  1 Comment

This is the new video from Deceptikonz. Featuring yours truly on the cuts!

It was fun to link up with the guys and collaborate again. Their new album ‘Evolution’ drops real soon. Keep an eye on Dawnraid.co.nz for more info on that.
Track produced by Twice As Nice. Video directed by Askew One.
(To my turntablist buddies; If we had more time I would have put a solo on the end but we got this done at the eleventh hour. I’m just happy my parts made it on the album!)

BeatKamp “Work Hard” (Prod. by P-Money and ATP)

May 11, 2010  |  Uncategorized  |  5 Comments

While Im trying my hand at different genres and tempo’s on my latest album, it’s still safe to say that Hip-Hop is my musical backbone. I’ve been passing some of my hip-hop beats around on the low and the first example to come back is this track with JR and ATP of BeatKamp from the Gold Coast.
ATP (Aaron the Track Prez) is an old mate from out South Auckland and his new discovery is the kid JR. You might have spotted them on the BeatKamp Anthem video earlier this year.
So I left the boys with some of my beats on recent trip and they hit me back with this joint, and it’s dope!
(You might also recognize a snippet of this beat from the Ironlak video).

Mean As

May 7, 2010  |  Uncategorized  |  No Comments

It’s been a solid week for me. The album release went off without a hitch. I did the promo rounds and visited a ton of radio stations, held the number one spot on iTunes album chart for half the week, got some great reviews and general positive feedback on the new tunes. I’ll take that as a win!
So to round out the week and have a little fun with my mates I’m gonna join David Dallas and guests at Khuja Lounge tonight for a bit of a party. The gig is called Mean As and it looks to be just that. We have a Street Fighter II tournament kicking off at 10pm and a special guest ‘first time ever’ DJ set from the makers of David Dallas’s hit’s “Indulge Me” and “I Get The Feelin”, West Auckland production duo Fire & Ice. Following that will be an acoustic performance from Mr. Vince Harder, the headline of the night is David Dallas himself and then I’ll get on the decks and have some fun after that. I’m looking to play a proper hip-hop set with a healthy dose of 90′s tunes and all the good stuff that you don’t hear on the radio often enough!
Tickets are $15 on the door, get in early cos it will sell out. Mean As – Khuja Lounge, very top Queen st, City.

Track A Day [Pt. 4] – DANCE WITH YOU

April 30, 2010  |  everything album, preview  |  No Comments

And today we have the fourth of our sneak preview tracks from the new album ‘Everything’.
This one is “Dance With You” ft. PNC, Vince Harder, Meryl Cassie & Mz J.
For this I was imagining Chic meets Stardust mixed with a little bit of pop & rap.
The result is a good groove and goodtimes!

Good Asss Review

Read this review today for the new album. Pretty stoked.
Opening line cracked me up. Rude words.

CD review: Everything – P-Money
✩✩✩✩½
By TOM CARDY – The Dominion Post (via stuff.co.nz)

P-Money is our most successful turntablist- cum-DJ-cum-producer, with a hand in the rise of some of New Zealand’s biggest hip-hop names, including Scribe.

P-Money’s own albums have also been satisfactory, as much for his experimentation with beats as for roping in hip-hop collaborators. But with Everything, P-Money not only surprises, but – and there’s no other way to put this – he astonishes.

The title nicely sums up the content. There’s familiar hip-hop (Big Things with Scribe, PNC and David Dallas, ironically the weakest track), but also funk, disco, rock and R&B – with 21st century R&B production informing the whole album.

The title track with Vince Harder – who has one of our best R&B voices – is arguably one of the best songs P-Money’s ever put his hand to. The quality continues, whether it’s the atmospheric dance-fuelled instrumentals (The Soul, Angels), more pounding R&B (Dallas and Aaradhna on Say Yeah) or the rock- infused Falling Down with Pluto’s Milan Borich.

Sure, P-Money seems to be working from a Coldplay template in his rock dabbling, but it works because it’s so damn catchy. Infectious, accessible, commercial, yet unpredictable. Everything else pales in comparison.

P-Money – Everything (Dirty) (available Monday, May 3rd).

I would wager that the hardcore hip-hop heads out there will disagree with Tom about the Big Things pt2 track, but hey, pretty sweet review!

ps. I understand the usage of the term ‘cum’ in the above text is grammatically correct. But my adolescent sense of humour still gets a cheap laugh out of it. Bonus.

Track A Day [Pt. 3] – FALLING DOWN

April 29, 2010  |  album, amplifier, everything album, preview  |  No Comments

The third preview track we have for you at Amplifier is a very special one to me.
It is entitled “Falling Down”.
The lyrics were written and performed by Milan Borich from the band Pluto.
The guitars are played by Evan Short. The rest is put together by yours truly.

Track A Day [Pt. 2] – BIG THINGS PT. 2

April 28, 2010  |  album, amplifier, everything, streaming  |  1 Comment

Todays track is “Big Things Pt. 2″ ft. Scribe, PNC and David Dallas.
One of the most persistent questions I get from fans is “Are you still working with Scribe?”. The answer is of course, yes!
And this track along with 2 others on the album are solid proof of that.
This one captures the spirit of my first album, hence the title. A dose of straight up Hip-Hop, unapologetic in it’s no-chorus/not for radio attitude.
This is the type of rap music I love. Each of the guys rip the beat to shreds. Which is your favourite verse? Who kills it the best?
