The entire Dirty Records crew, PNC, Scribe, David Dallas and myself, visited the George FM studio in Ponsonby, Auckland NZ on Friday the 4th of May to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of our label. Nick D and Dean Campbell from George Breakfast suggested we have the guys rhyme over some George FM favorites. So I mixed Azealia Banks ’212′ instrumental (aka ‘Float My Boat ‘ produced by Lazy Jay) into DJ Zinc’s ‘Wile Out’ and the rest is history! Why Dirty Records?

Back in 2001 I was a young upstart building a nice little reputation for myself via DJ Battles, Nightclubs and on the airwaves, bringing the latest Hip-Hop records to the people every week via 95bfm’s Trueschool Hip-Hop Show and on the late night music video show ‘Full Clip’ (part of TV2′s great but short-lived M2 start up). I had a hand in anything I could do that was Hip-Hop and DJ related; from making and selling mixtapes, scratching and performing on record and on stage with NZ musical icon Che-Fu to the occasional overseas trip representing NZ as a Turntablist.

DJ’ing was and had been the main focus of my life to that point but I also had another “hobby” that was beginning to demand more of my time. I liked to make beats. Hip-Hop music was a passion I had obsessed over since I was a child. I collected every magazine, bought or copied every album that I could, recorded every rap video that made it’s way on to television. I played around writing some raps as a teen, even tried my hand at graffiti for a while, but scratching and the science of beat-making, crate digging and producing were my forté. The music was my heart.

Call it creative expansion, call it a logical progression, either way it was inevitable that I would want to record and release my own music.

So I set about doing just that. With the help of a high school buddy who had invested in a humble home studio I was able to gather my many talented friends to record demo songs with them rapping over beats I had created in my bedroom. As each track was recorded and finished I would take the songs to the programmers and DJ’s at Auckland University radio station Bfm and convince them to play our (completely unmixed) demo recordings on-air. Which they did!
This proved to be a key moment in my life story.

Enter ‘The Professor’, one of the Drive show DJ’s at Bfm who would often play and support my tracks. He spoke of a local independent record label by the name of Kog Transmissions that specialized in electronic music whom he thought I should meet with. Truth be told, at the time I had little knowledge of or care for local electronic music (my head was firmly stuck in hip-hop, funny how things change!) but on The Prof’s advice and encouragement we had the meeting. I played my music and pitched them the idea of putting out an album of tracks similar to the demo’s I had been recording and successfully spinning on the radio. The crew at Kog were receptive to me but more skeptical of the potential of local rap music. They knew little of the genre and feared that Kog was not the right label to release such a project. I detected their reservations and pitched an even bolder idea. Which was to let me release the record through their company but under a different brand, in a sense creating a ‘sub-label’ scenario. I’m sure there was a lot of debate as to the validity of my proposal but fortunately I had one champion inside Kog who would become my greatest ally and a life-long friend, Mr. Callum August. Callum was a lanky, weed smoking, skate board riding employee (read: mostly unpaid volunteer) at Kog who by some twist of fate or naive confidence was able to convince the rest of the board to take a chance on this album project and establish our yet unnamed rap ‘sub-label’. And they did.

So that was it, I had a record deal(!) with a no-budget, little known but very industrious indie label. And not only that, I had actually secured my very own “Label deal”!! Or at least that’s what I told everyone, ha.
Truth was I had been granted a shot and Callum had put his rep on the line to back me. He was to handle the business and I was to create the magic. And that’s how the story began….

DJs P-Money & Dan Aux have had their first collaborative single Kinda Lovin’ chosen for a worldwide release in March through renowned French label, Kitsune.

Covering a broader spectrum than music alone, Kitsune is the brainchild of Gildas Loaec (a young dynamic entrepreneur from Brittany) and Masaya Kuroki (an architecture student who switched to fashion design). Collaboratively, Loaec and Kuroki created Kitsune to combine all the things they were into – clothing, image and music – establishing a sought-after and revered French label as a result.

“I was flattered and excited when the folks from Kitsune approached us looking to license the single Kinda Lovin’,” says P-Money. “Kitsune is very selective about what they choose to release and they are also very influential in music and fashion. Gildas Loaec was a key member of the Daft Punk creative team and I’m a huge fan of what they all have achieved musically and stylistically. Loaec is a taste-maker extraordinaire so it’s a huge compliment to be picked up by such a discerning individual.”

P-Money and Dan Aux’s collaborations stick very close to the traditions laid down by 90’s house pioneers Masters At Work, Daft Punk and Armand Van Helden. The pair find only the greatest disco house loops and arrange them into present-day dance floor destroyers.  Kinda Lovin’ is solid evidence of the disco gold that these two uncovered – a funky summer groove, armed with the mother of all hooks.

“Kitsune is the Japanese word for fox,” comments Dan Aux. “The kitsune is said to have the power to change its appearance and its face, which is something that Pete & I have been working on with the Disco 3 project and we hope to get some botox work done later in the year…but seriously, I’m just stoked they love our music and we can keep pushing New Zealand to the world.”

Kinda Lovin will be released worldwide through Kitsune on March 26th.
